KAON is an open-source ontology management infrastructure targeted for business applications. It includes a comprehensive tool suite allowing easy ontology creation and management and provides a framework for building ontology-based applications. An important focus of KAON is scalable and efficient reasoning with ontologies.

Basic information:

  • Database Support: Any SQL2-compatible, tested with MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, IBM DB2, Oracle 9i
  • Ontology language: Based on RDF(S) with proprietary extensions for algebraic property characteristics (symmetric, transitive and inverse), cardinality, modularization, meta-modeling, explicit representation of lexical information.
  • Licence: GNU Lesser General Public Licence (LGPL)
  • Information about KAON2: http://kaon2.semanticweb.org KAON2 is a successor to the KAON project (often referred to as KAON1). The main difference to KAON1 is the supported ontology language: KAON1 used a proprietary extension of RDFS, whereas KAON2 is based on OWL-DL. Please note that KAON2 is a completely new system, and is not backward-compatible with KAON1.
